This occurs due to the fact that our mind already has the paper money of our country associated in our brain, since we use it daily in our purchases and sales, for this reason, when we see the other currency and do not have it associated, we are not aware of the value it represents.
\nThis can represent, in many occasions, spending in excess in the country of destination, since if we observe what travelers do when they arrive in the country, in addition to consuming too much for being on vacation or traveling, they also exceed spending due to the simple fact that by not associating the value of the
\ncurrency in their mind, they do not manage the money in the same way.<\/p>\n

When we receive an income in our native currency, upon knowing the currency and the value, we tend to manage much better than if we did it in foreign currency. In fact, very few people who go on a trip and change their currency, when returning to their country of origin, return the excess money and exchange it again for their
\nlocal currency.<\/p>\n

In addition, if you look at it, when you return from a trip and have some bills left, we tend to give them to friends and acquaintances as a souvenir of the destination, a fact that shows how we do not perceive the value of that currency, given that if it was a bill from your country, very probably you would not give it or you would give
\nit as a gift.
\nAs we have said, this happens due to the simple perception we have of the money of the country where we reside. The daily use of our currency means that we associate the direct value as soon as we see a bill, since our senses quickly associate the bill with the value it represents. Something that does not happen abroad, given that, in the first place, different prices, and, secondly, a different currency value, we do not associate the value that this bill represents and the purchasing power it has.<\/p>\n

The same happens with purchases abroad. When dealing with different currencies, it is much more difficult to identify if a purchase is expensive or cheap, given that by not reflecting the change, we tend to spend and consume more, as well as give more \u201ccontributions and tips\u201d.
\nIf we observe the use we make of the currency when we go abroad, we can identify how when it comes to tourists, the economic contributions in terms of donations and tips are usually of a greater amount, while when returning to their country of origin, the donations are lower. When we return from a trip where we have used another currency different from ours, our perception of spending is much less than if it had been to a destination where the currency is the same.
\nThis is something really interesting, given that the bill has a value in the market, but by not associating it and not recognizing it well; we usually give it a lower value than our currency. A few months ago, some young Spaniards did a test to corroborate this, offering people a 100 dollar bill and a 20 euro bill with the option to choose and keep one. If our mind were rational and we attended the currency exchange to choose the most valuable bill, our choice would be quickly the one of 100 dollars, while by the pure instinct, 76% of the random sample chose the 20-euro bill.
\nAs the professor and prestigious economist Huerta de Soto says, people do not see the value in a paper, as is the case of the bill, but that people see the bill as a means to obtain a certain end. When we see a bill, our perception is not that of the bill, to which we give a value, but we perceive that bill as the means to obtain various goods that we want to acquire based on the value of the bill and the value of the good.
\nThis reflects how people associate the value of money with recognition and not with the value that the bill represents, given that if their instinct was to take the most valuable, this would have taken the $ 100 and not the 20 euros. However, most respondents chose the 20-euro bill for the simple fact that by associating it with a known value and a day-to-day market, this could more quickly associate the value of the 20-euro bill with the value of the $ 100 bill.
\nFor this same reason, when a person travels to a country with another currency, this person tends to spend much more than if they traveled to another country that has the same currency. In fact, the feeling of spending when we go to a foreign country of different currency is inferior than if we had gone to a country where the
\ncurrency was the same as ours.
\nIt is true that with the Internet and a Smartphone in hand, youth is changing this trend, since by taking out the Smartphone and asking Siri a question, it automatically tells us the value of the currency in exchange. However, it still happens that people who travel to countries with a different currency, they spend more in these countries than in the countries where the currency is the same.<\/p>\n

As we commented and making a summary, this happens simply due to the fact that our mind quickly associates the natal money as an object of interchangeable value, while the ignorance and the dissociation of the foreign currency, does not allow us to quantify well the value of the currency.
\nA simple associative act is really interesting because, as we have said, this rapid association leads us to control spending even more and perceive a greater sense of loss when it comes to our currency, while if it is a foreign currency, it does not hurt so much despite the fact that the value is greater.
\nFor this it is good to know that nowadays, it is enough to access the internet to instantly know the value of one currency with respect to another, this is a completely useful action, since it will allow us to control spending much better. If you want to travel to a country with a foreign currency do not hesitate, use a currency converter on your Smartphone and you will see how the expenses and administration of your resources on the trip will be much more efficient and effective.<\/p>\n
